Security Dynamics introduces SecurID® modem; Combines industry-standard SecurID user authentication technology with Motorola 28.8Kbps modem

Business Wire, April 1, 1996

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1996--Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDTI), a leading provider of network security solutions, today announced the SecurID Modem, an integration of its industry-standard SecurID token technology with a high-performance PC-Card modem from Motorola. Using a simple, one-step process, mobile professionals can easily and securely access a corporate network from their laptop computer using Security Dynamics' two-factor user authentication and Motorola's high quality V.34 28.8 Kbps modem.

The SecurID Modem is a multi-functional PC-Card modem that combines automated SecurID authentication with full-featured communications software to secure valuable corporate information. Remote users can quickly send and receive data and faxes with Motorola's advanced modem technology. The SecurID Modem also connects to leading cellular phones, enabling users to access important business information from remote sites where telephone lines are not available. The SecurID Modem's automated log-in simplifies network access. The user simply enters his or her secret personal identification number (PIN), and the SecurID Modem automatically sends the user's PIN and SecurID access code to the host for verification.

"As businesses continue to expand network access for remote professionals, they require increased flexibility for securely linking to the network," said James Geary, vice president of marketing at Security Dynamics. "By working closely with Motorola to create the SecurID Modem, Security Dynamics combines its industry-standard user authentication technology with Motorola's high-performance modem technology to create a product that is easy-to-use and highly secure for the remote professional."

"Mobile professionals are demanding ways to easily access networks from remote locations while preserving valuable PCMCIA slots," said Christine Cantarino, Director of Special PC Cards, Mobile Products Division. "The SecurID Modem delivers industry- leading SecurID technology in a high-performance Motorola modem card, utilizing only one PCMCIA slot while providing both powerful protection and premium modem performance."

As with all SecurID tokens, the SecurID Modem works in conjunction with Security Dynamics' hardware and software access control products (ACE/Server(R) software and Access Control Modules) to authenticate a user's identity, allowing network access to authorized users and locking out hackers and would-be trespassers. The SecurID Modem provides dynamic, two-factor authentication that combines something the user knows -- a memorized personal identification number (PIN) -- with something the user possesses -- a SecurID Modem that generates a random access code that changes every 60 seconds. To access a protected network, the user simply enters his or her secret PIN when prompted. The combination of the user's PIN and the SecurID Modem's randomly generated access code create a highly secure one-time password. The log-in process is one quick step, and processing of the user credentials is transparent to the user.

Price and Availability

The SecurID Modem will be sold through Security Dynamics and is currently expected to be available in the second quarter of 1996, with pricing to start at $450 each.
