Motorola and Security Dynamics introduce SecurID PCMCIA V.34 authentication modem with cellular connectivity; combines superior network security with Motorola's high-performance 28.8 modem technology
Business Wire, April 1, 1996
SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1996--Motorola's Mobile Computing Products Division announced today the introduction of SecurID Modem -- a multi-function PC Card that combines Motorola's industry-leading 28.8 modem technology with SecurID(R) network authentication from Security Dynamics.
SecurID Modem is designed for businesses that need to cost effectively enhance the security of their existing network system, as well as the authentication of their users accessing remotely. SecurID Modem provides mobile professionals with the premiere access control security technology in the marketplace, and offers simplified logon procedures, premium modem performance, and connectivity to leading cellular phones.
"As more workers extend the boundaries of their offices via remote modem access -- and as more companies link to the Internet -- unauthorized user access to computer and network resources has become a growing concern among businesses today," said Christine Cantarino, Director of Special PC Cards, Mobile Computing Products Division. "At the same time, mobile users require high-performance modems for fast, convenient anytime/anywhere access to their corporate networks. SecurID Modem is the first product available that fully addresses both these requirements as a single cost-effective PC Card."
"Security Dynamics is committed to creating easy-to-use solutions for providing highly secure user authentication to organizations which require vital network resource protection," said Fred Pinkett, Product Line Manager for Security Dynamics. "By working closely with Motorola to create the SecurID Modem, Security Dynamics will further this commitment by offering the industry-leading SecurID technology in a high-performance Motorola modem PC Card."
Affordable, Effective Network Security Now Fully Integrated Mobile Computing
SecurID Modem is the first PC Card to provide compatibility with Security Dynamics' ACE/Server(R) network security software and hardware or software Access Control Modules.
The SecurID Modem:
o Sends and receives data and faxes quickly and accurately with
28.8 modem performance at V.34 standard modulation. Operating at
DTE rates of up to 115 Kbps, the modem offers increased throughput
with V.42bis/MNP5 data compression. Error correction via
V.42/MNP2-4 specification ensures the integrity of transferred
data. Fax operation is at 14.4 Kbps, and is compatible with
Group 3, Class 1 and 2 fax machines.
o Includes Security Dynamic's patented, easy-to-use SecurID
technology. The SecurID Modem provides dynamic, two-factor
authentication that combines something the user knows -- a
memorized personal identification number (PIN) -- with something
the user possesses -- a randomly generated access code that changes
every 60 seconds. To access a protected network, the user simply
enters his or her secret PIN at the password prompt. The
combination of the user's PIN and the SecurID Modem's randomly
generated token code create a highly secure one-time password.
By eliminating the reusable password as part of the authentication
scheme, Security Dynamics eliminates the problem of password abuse.
o Connects to leading data-ready cellular phones . The SecurID
Modem is equipped with Enhanced Throughput Cellular (ETC) error
correction protocol compatible with data-ready phones. This
enables users access to important business information in the
office or on the road -- even when phone lines are not available.
o Provides power saving capabilities for extended battery life on
mobile computers.
The SecurID Modem is Windows '95(TM) and MAC-OS compatible. The package also includes modem cables and a dual RJ-11 connector that allows a computer and telephone to share a single telephone line, eliminating cumbersome cable transfers between voice and data communications.
SecurID was developed as part of a line of mobile computing peripherals from Motorola's Mobile Computing Products Division, and will be sold directly by Security Dynamics. Other Motorola PCMCIA cards include Marquis, a 28.8 Modem/Fax LAN adapter; Mariner, a 28.8 modem/fax/ethernet LAN adapter with cellular and paging connectivity; and Montana, a V.34 modem card with cellular and paging connectivity.
