StarSQL for OS/2 Now Shipping; Fast, direct, low-cost driver for DB2 data access available from StarWare and IBM

Business Wire, April 15, 1996

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1996--StarWare Connectivity Software today announced the shipment of its flagship StarSQL data access driver for OS/2 platforms.

The StarSQL driver enables direct access to IBM DB2 databases from within native OS/2 applications. The new driver, which supports IBM's CM/2 APPC engine for communications with IBM hosts, is available directly from StarWare and from IBM.

Introduced in February, 1995, StarSQL is a software driver that allows any ODBC-compliant desktop program to access data directly from IBM midrange, mainframe and UNIX systems, which currently store more than 70 percent of corporate databases. Leveraging IBM's Distributed Relational Database Architecture (DRDA) technology to request host data, StarSQL is a client-only package that requires no special software or maintenance on the host system. StarSQL allows users to bring record-by-record information from IBM DB2 databases into desktop applications without having to leave their application. At the same time, the new driver enables programmers to develop transparent client/server applications for DB2 data access, using tools such as Visual Basic or Lotus Notes.

Direct connections to more databases

StarSQL features full support for the entire range of IBM databases, including SQL/DS, IBM's advanced DB2 database for VM/VSE architectures; DB2/2 for the OS/2 system and DB2/6000 for the AIX UNIX environment. Users may connect to these systems through standard SNA gateway servers, such as Microsoft SNA Server or Novell NetWare for SAA.

may leverage IBM's NS/Win router for direct connections over SNA; NetSoft's Elite SNA router, or IDEAssoctive implementation

that provides faster, more efficient data access.

-- Demonstration versione transfer, remote command execution and remote data queues, and remote print spooling. StarWare products are marketed directly by StarWare and by StarWare's domestic and international resellers. The company is privately held. -0-
