Reflection for IBM Connects Windows, Window 95 and NT to Mainframes and AS/400s
Business Wire, April 15, 1996
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1996--Reflection for IBM, a new package from enterprise-wide connectivity software leader WRQ, gives Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 and Windows NT users access to applications and data on IBM mainframes and AS/400 midrange systems.
Reflection for IBM offers particular advantages to enterprises looking for the same functionality in TCP/IP connections to mainframes and AS/400s that they are accustomed to over proprietary IBM network (SNA or APPC) connections.
Support for MPTN (Multi-Protocol Transport Networking) overcomes certain limitations in connecting PCs to AS/400s via TCP/IP. Support for TN3270E overcomes limitations in connecting PCs to mainframes over TCP/IP.
Delivering Uncompromising TCP/IP Connectivity
MPTN is an open architecture from IBM that enables integration of the AS/400 into a multi-vendor connectivity environment via TCP/IP. Without MPTN, TCP/IP has limitations in file transfer, terminal services, and printing. By supporting MPTN, Reflection for IBM solves these problems, giving PC users full 5250 access to AS/400s over TCP/IP.
TN3270E is a recently adopted standard from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for 3270 terminal and SNA print services over TCP/IP. The extended protocol addresses deficiencies that have prevented widespread adoption of TN3270 as a way of running mission-critical SNA applications on router-based intranets.
"Customers want all the benefits of open TCP/IP networking without giving up functionality. At WRQ, we have expertise in integrating TCP/IP into heterogeneous enterprise networks, and this newest package reflects the work we've done to support TCP/IP integration for IBM systems," said Shaun Wolfe, WRQ's manager of product marketing.
Since most customers need to maintain some SNA connectivity while the transition to TCP/IP, or may actually continue pure SNA support for some users Reflection for IBM also includes support for direct SNA connections to the mainframe. Users can either connect to the mainframe with SNA over a direct coaxial connection, or use SNA over a LAN via a Token Ring or Ethernet network Reflection for IBM also supports connections via SNA server or NetWare for SAA.
Other Features of Reflection for IBM
In addition to supporting a variety of connectivity options, Reflection for IBM provides robust 3270 and 5250 terminal emulation and the Reflection Profiler, which lets IS managers customize the product and user access based o the needs of each individual or work group.
It also supplies a set of tools-Reflection Basic scripting, script recorder and OLE Automation support-t create simple client/server solutions that leverage investments in host applications and hardware, while giving users the benefits of easy access to data across the enterprise. Finally, it is backed by WRQ's award-winning technical support team, winners of Infoworld's 1995 Product of the Year Award for Best Technical Support.
Pricing and Availability
Reflection for IBM version 6.0 will be available in June 1996. Retail price is $299 (U.S.) for a single-user copy. Volume and limited site license pricing apply. Competitive upgrades are also available. Reflection for IBM can be purchased directly from WRQ or from a worldwide network of distributors, resellers, and VARs.
