AMERITECH AND BELLSOUTH DEPLOY VOICE CONTROL SYSTEMS' CELLULAR SPEECH RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY; Voice Activated Dialing Capabilities Make Cellular Phones Safer, Easier to Use While Driving

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1996--Voice Control Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:VCSI) today announced that its speech recognition technology implemented by Brite Voice Systems in Brite's VoiceSelect(TM) platform has been deployed by Ameritech Cellular Services and BellSouth Cellular Corp. These cellular service providers are using VCS's speech recognition to provide hands-free voice dialing services in their wireless networks. The VCS technology is integrated within the cellular network by Brite Voice Systems through Brite's VoiceSelect platform.

BellSouth markets the voice dialing service under the name "PowerDial" in Richmond, Va. and Miami, West Palm Beach, and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. -- and as "VoiceTouch" in Houston, Texas. Ameritech has introduced VoiceSelect in St. Louis, Mo. and several cities in the Ohio valley, including Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton, Ohio. Ameritech already offers the service in Chicago, Ill.; Detroit, Mich,; and Madison and Milwaukee, Wis. Voice activated dialing services based upon VCS technology are now available to all Ameritech cellular subscribers nationwide.

VCS technology enables cellular users to dial calls using voice commands. Users simply say a name from their personal directory or speak the digits of a phone number to connect their calls. In addition, voice dialing enables users to access their voicemail services through speech input, an otherwise difficult proposition while driving. VCS's highly accurate, noise tolerant speech recognition technology is based on the company's unique phonetic approach. VCS technology provides both speaker- independent and speaker-dependent speech recognition and understands discrete and continuous spoken input.
