Seagate Software, Storage Management Group Enhances its BackOffice Strategy with New Products; Company Offers Cost-Effective, Integrated Data Protection Solutions Based on Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Exchange Server

Business Wire, April 2, 1996

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1996--Seagate Software, Storage Management Group (SMG) formerly Arcada Software and Palindrome, today announced two new products as part of its backup strategy for Microsoft Exchange Server: a backup module for Microsoft Exchange Server and a backup agent for Microsoft Exchange Server. The products provide automated client/server functionality for the integration of backup for Microsoft Exchange Server into existing network backup routines. As a result, customers are afforded a cost-effective and comprehensive solution for total network backup.

The company's new module for Microsoft Exchange Server is designed for use with Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT, which offers complete data protection for the entire Windows NT network. The new agent for Microsoft Exchange Server is designed for use with Seagate Backup Director and Seagate Storage Manager products. Backup Director offers highly automated network backup and Storage Manager provides automated backup, archiving and integrated HSM solutions for growing networks.

Rather than incurring the expense of performing and maintaining separate backup procedures, network managers can utilize the new products to schedule backups for Microsoft Exchange Server to occur at the same time as their regular network backups. Managers also can reduce their media costs and administration overhead because the products integrated functionality allows Microsoft Windows NT based network data and Microsoft Exchange Server based data to be backed up on a single tape.

"Seagate has been a Microsoft strategic partner since the inception of Windows NT and has helped lead the development of data protection and storage management solutions for Windows NT," said Bob Brown, vice president, data management products at Seagate Software, SMG. "The availability of the module and agent for Microsoft Exchange Server demonstrates our continued commitment to making total network backup as easy and affordable as possible for our customers."

To further support that strategy, key features have been incorporated into Seagate Softwares products for Microsoft Exchange Server, including:

On-line support -- enables active Microsoft Exchange servers to be protected without taking them off-line, allowing mission critical servers to remain open 24 hours and be backed up while in use.

Autoloader support -- automates unattended backups by providing support for an extensive list of autoloaders, including support for multi-drive devices.

Error notification -- utilizes SNMP and e-mail notification to alert administrators of errors with Microsoft Exchange backups.

In addition, Seagate Software developed the backup utility included with Microsoft Exchange Server. Seagate Software also supplies the backup utility included in Windows NT, providing years of Windows NT data protection experience for customers. The new products for Microsoft Exchange Server add features that provide users with full automation and integration of Microsoft Exchange backups.

"Microsoft is pleased that Seagate Software has extended its Windows NT and Microsoft BackOffice family to meet the additional data protection needs of customers for its product offerings for Microsoft Exchange Server," said Rob Shutlott, general manager, Exchange Server Connectivity. "Since the inception of Windows NT Server, Seagate Software has worked closely with Microsoft to provide world class Windows NT data protection solutions which fully integrate with the complete Microsoft BackOffice."

The Seagate Backup Exec module for Microsoft Exchange Server will sell for an MSRP of $695 per backup server. The agent for Microsoft Exchange Server for Seagate Backup Director and Seagate Storage Manager will sell for an MSRP of $995 per Exchange Server. The products will be available this month.
