GST Telecommunications Opens Office in Japan

VANCOUVER, Washington--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1996-- GST Japan, part of the GST Telecommunications, Inc. ("AMEX-GST") family of companies has opened its first office in Asia.
GST Japan, the Tokyo based regional office, will be headed by Martin P. Seamans who has nearly twenty years telecommunications experience in the Pacific Rim.
Initially, GST Japan will focus on marketing international long distance services including prepaid phone cards and calling cards. GST will also offer International Toll Free Access utilizing existing international public switched networks.
With the advent of Asian deregulation, GST plans the expansion of dedicated voice and data facilities along with enhanced network services such as Internet access plus wireless and cellular service. John Warta, President of GST Telecommunications Inc., said "GST's business approach is to focus on a regional strategy by utilizing GST's Western United States networks as a gateway to Mexico and the Pacific Rim. GST looks forward to servicing the international marketplace."
GST is financed partly by Tomen America Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Tomen Corporation, a general trading company with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Tomen has executed a Master Credit Agreement with GST which contemplates $100 million in financing for the development of telecommunications networks in the United States. In addition, Tomen is a material shareholder of GST with a designee on its board of directors.
GST Telecommunications, Inc. currently operates networks in fourteen cities in the Western United States and Hawaii, with an additional six cities under construction in the San Francisco Bay area. The company provides a broad range of integrated telecommunications products and services, through the development and operation of competitive access and other telecommunications networks. GST's primary focus is customers located in Tier II and Tier III markets in the Western United States and Hawaii. In addition, the Company manufactures telecommunication switching equipment and provides network management and billing systems through its wholly owned subsidiary National Applied Computer Technologies, Inc. of Orem, Utah.
