Business Wire, April 29, 1996

REDLANDS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1996--Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. (ESRI), Monday announced support for its ARC/INFO GIS software on Digital's Alpha Systems for the Microsoft(r) Windows NT(r) environment.

Together with Digital and Microsoft, ESRI will provide, for the first time, ARC/INFO for Windows NT on a RISC platform.

GIS users will be able to take advantage of Microsoft Windows NT on Digital's AlphaStation and AlphaServer as well as its entire family of personal workstations products. Based on either Pentium or Alpha processors, these personal workstations deliver the power of a workstation at the price and productivity of a PC.

"The availability of ESRI's ARC/INFO software on Digital's family of personal workstations for Microsoft Windows NT offers GIS users the highest level of Windows NT performance in the GIS industry," said Herb Shumway, vice-president, Technical Applications Group at Digital. "Digital provides ESRI's ARC/INFO users with the broadest range of Windows NT workstation performance on a single platform including both Intel-based and Alpha-based models.

"The Strategic Alliance established between Digital and Microsoft, combined with the availability of ESRI's ARC/INFO on Digital personal workstations, offers GIS users the benefits of leading GIS functionality, high performance, and low-cost Windows-based computing," Shumway added.

Pieter Knook, general manager of industry sales and marketing, at Microsoft added, "With the decision of ESRI to release ARC/INFO for Windows NT on both Intel and Alpha Systems, ESRI offers a compelling product that offers the performance and value expected by users."
