Business Wire, April 9, 1996
MARLBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--APRIL 9, 1996--Lycos, Inc. (NASDAQ:LCOS) announced today it will license its full suite of Internet guides to AT&T for use as a navigation tool in the new WorldNetSM Service, AT&T's value-added Internet access service In an arrangement scheduled to begin in April, Lycos services, including the popular Lycos catalog, Point Reviews and the new a2z directory, will be adopted by AT&T to help WorldNet users better navigate the Internet.
AT&T and its AT&T WorldNet Service made headlines with a late February announcement of a special trial offer. The offer gives AT&T residential long distance customers who register by December 31, 1996 free access to the Internet for five hours each month for one year after registration.
"There is obvious synergy to this arrangement," said Lycos President and CEO Robert J. Davis. "AT&T's new service is designed to help people find their way into cyberspace, and has chosen the Lycos products to help guide their customers toward the specific information they're looking for on the Internet."
The Lycos services will appear with a new WorldNet look and feel. Lycos, which is best known for its keyword search engine, now contains nearly 35 million unique URLs for comprehensive searching.
"Lycos brings a valuable set of navigation tools to AT&T WorldNet Service," said Tom Evslin, AT&T vice president of AT&T WorldNet Service. "One of the advantages of our service is the power it gives customers to locate people and information on the Internet. Lycos' services are an important part of that capability."
AT&T WorldNet Service includes a world-class, 24-hour, toll-free hotline, directories and topical areas to help people find useful information, guided tours for newcomers, navigational aids for users of all skill levels, including an AT&T-branded version of the Netscape Navigator browser software, and electronic mail. With available software that can also be easily downloaded, parents will be able to block access to portions of the Internet they regard a unsuitable for their children.
Lycos offers three lenses through which users can easily explore the World Wide Web, whether browsing categories, searching specific topics or seeking out objective reviews of the Web's best sites. Besides its spidering technology for topic- or word-specific searching, the Lycos services include the highly respected Point Reviews, critical assessments of web sites; and the brand new a2z directory of sites, organized in 16 popular categories and nearly a thousand sub-categories, for easy browsing through topics of information available on the Internet. The URLs contained in a2z are the Net's most popular -- those with the greatest number of external links pointing to them from other sites, and therefore bearing the Web community's own endorsement of their content and value.
