UB Networks Migrates Hunterdon Central Regional High School to ATM; GeoLAN 500 NonStop Super Switching Hub Helps Hunterdon Open the Door to a Higher Level of Learning
Business Wire, August 12, 1996
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1996--UB Networks today announced Hunterdon Central Regional High School (HCRHS) in Flemington, N.J., has selected the GeoLAN/500 super switching hub as the foundation for the network infrastructure supporting a leading edge educational system.
UB Networks is migrating the HCRHS network backbone from shared LAN to ATM switching. The new ATM backbone will provide high-speed access to Internet servers and CD-ROM databases. The GeoLAN/500 super switching hub delivers robust access to local servers and eliminates network congestion.
HCRHS is at the forefront of the movement towards making technology an integral part of educating America's students, offering a curriculum structured around real-world complex problems in a task-oriented learning environment. This includes student access to a network that links every classroom, office and building via fiber-optic cable on a 73-acre campus, including a television and radio station. Each student has an account on the network and dial-in access to the library or school bulletin board.
HCRHS uses the network to provide information and resources not only to students, but also to the community, the nation and the world. HCRHS will soon be conducting interactive classroom sessions between local colleges, including Rider University, and gifted and talented high school students in an online mentoring program.
"What sets Hunterdon apart from other schools is the implementation of technology not for technology's sake, but to enhance students' ability to navigate in an increasingly complex world," said Raymond Farley, superintendent of Hunterdon Central Regional High School.
"With the GeoLAN/500 from UB, our network has plenty of growing room as we move towards multimedia applications and expand classrooms to a global level," stated Dr. Ron Pare, director of information systems at Hunterdon.
HCRHS bases its educational curriculum on the fundamental premise that the body of knowledge is expanding faster than teachers can assimilate or distribute that knowledge, the school is in the process of changing the delivery system. The teacher will no longer be the "sage on the stage" but rather a "guide on the side."
Equipment at Hunterdon includes the GeoLAN/500 super switching hub, GeoSwitch/155 ATM workgroup switch and GeoStax/E Ethernet stackable hubs on an 850 node network.
