Qualstar automated tape libraries support new Mammoth technology
Business Wire, August 12, 1996
CANOGA PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1996--All TLS-4000 automated tape libraries now support the new Exabyte Mammoth tape drives.
These drives offer up to 40-GB capacity (compressed) on a single cartridge, with data transfer rates of up to 6-MB/sec. This is approximately six times the performance of earlier 8-mm tape drives. TLS-4000 libraries are designed for enterprisewide backup, high-capacity near-on-line storage and data archive applications. The TLS-4000 family comprises eight models housing one to six tape drives and up 120 tape cartridges, yielding capacities from 70 GB to 4.8 TB.
Mammoth drives are fully read-compatible with cartridges written on earlier Exabyte tape drives. Offering a native capacity of 20 GB and a compressed capacity of 40 GB, the new Mammoth data cartridges use Advanced Metal Evaporated media. The MTBF of the Mammoth drive is more than 200,000 hours.
"We anticipate wide acceptance of the new Mammoth tape drives and cartridges," noted Bob Covey, Qualstar's vice president of marketing. "There is an ever-growing thirst for additional data capacity and throughput. Mammoth is important to the large universe of 8-mm tape users."
Designed For Reliability...No More Belts and Pulleys
TLS-4000 Series libraries, incorporates advanced features that set the standard in the 8-mm tape library market. I/O Ports are provided for removing and inserting tape cartridges without opening the front door, providing improved control over data and enhanced physical security for the media itself. A mobile barcode scanner performs a complete cartridge inventory in under 100 seconds. Qualstar's unique Inventory Sentry and patented tape wear reduction systems are also incorporated.
Qualstar replaced the belts and pulleys commonly used in other designs with brushless DC motors and high-precision lead screws. Digital closed-loop motion-control systems and optical position sensors assure fast, trouble-free cartridge handling. Independent power supplies for the drives and the robotics assure further reliability, as does a filtered positive air pressure system.
