S-MOS Systems and EIDOS Interactive Working Together to Develop 3D Games for the PC
Business Wire, August 12, 1996
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1996--EIDOS Interactive, San Francisco, publisher of popular game titles such as Flying Nightmare II, Tomb Raider, and the online flight simulator Confirmed Kill, is working with S-MOS Systems to port current and future titles to S-MOS' PIX 3D rendering engine.
PIX supports popular API drivers including Microsoft's Direct 3D, Argonaut's BRender, Criterion Renderware and Apple Computer's RAVE. PIX also offers on-chip polygon setup and rasterization, perspective correction, visibility determination, texture-map address calculation and a bus mastering PCI interface compatible with any 2D display, making porting games easier than conventional 3D graphics accelerators.
EIDOS is currently evaluating PIX with a view to porting to the above titles as well as others such as Deathtrap Dungeon and Terracide.
"It is our pleasure that EIDOS, a leader in interactive games and multi-platform developer, is supporting PIX," said Tom Endicott, S-MOS vice president of sales and marketing. "With PIX, the combination of cutting-edge technology and enormous creative talents of EIDOS will no doubt stir a new wave in 3D games," he added.
"We expect PIX' high pixel fill rate of 66 million pixels-per- second, advanced texture mapping algorithm and ease of porting will enhance the viewing and game playing experience of world renowned EIDOS developed titles," said Colin Boswell, EIDOS vice president of research and development.
Designed for PCI-based systems and add-on cards, PIX works with any existing PCI-connected 2D graphics subsystem. It uses the 2D subsystem's frame buffer for storing rendered 3D images, eliminating the need for additional and costly 3D memory.
EIDOS Interactive (Domark/Core Design/US Gold), established in 1996, develops and publishes interactive entertainment software for the PC, Macintosh, Internet, Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation. EIDOS Interactive products are available through major distributors, retailers and mass merchants worldwide.
S-MOS Systems, Inc., designs, develops and markets graphics drivers, controllers and 3D integrated circuits, as well as subsystems, cards and ICs for desktop and smaller PC-based systems and displays. The company also offers semicustom design services and contract manufacturing services through corporate affiliate Seiko Epson Corp. in Japan. S-MOS was founded in 1983 and is privately held. -0-
