Business Wire, August 14, 1996
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 1996-- Telefonica de Argentina achieved a phone density index of 20 working lines ever one hundred inhabitants, which positions the company as the foremost private telecommunications operator in Latin America, even ahead of countries such as Brazil or Chile.
When Telefonica took office in November 1990, phone density was 12 lines every one hundred inhabitants, which shows an index growth of 66.67 percent for the last six years. Such a density growth was accomplished on account of high investment, that exceeded 4.5 billion dollars during this period.
Working lines numbered 1,695,504 by that time, while at present this figure reaches 3,256,251, it is to say a 92 percent rise.
By having 20 lines every one hundred inhabitants, the area that Telefonica de Argentina serves (1,515,000 square kilometers) outpaces some other countries such as Brazil (8.6); Mexico (9.7); Chile (13.7) and Venezuela (10). Some others are still ahead as it is the case of more developed countries such as the United States (62.2); United Kingdom (47.4); Canada (57); Japan (49); Spain (38.6) and Germany (48.2).
