Business Wire, August 15, 1996

KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 1996--CALIAN TECHNOLOGY INC.(TSE: CTY) SED Systems Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Calian Technology Ltd., has been awarded a contract by Lockheed Martin, Space Mission Systems to supply a Payload Test System for the Globalstar program. Under the terms of the $3M U.S. contract, SED will provide two Measurement and Calibration equipment subsystems to be installed in Europe and North America and a Control Monitor and Analysis subsystem to be installed in San Jose, C.A.

Globalstar is a low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellite-based digital telecommunications system that will offer wireless telephone and other telecommunications services worldwide beginning in 1998. Service will be delivered through a U.S. satellite LEO constellation that will provide wireless telephone service to virtually every populated area of the world.

The satellites are placed into a low-earth orbit of 1400 km at which time the Payload Test System is used to test them before they are put into service. According to Mark Noete, SED's IOT Systems Manager, this project will enhance SED's In-Orbit Testing capability by adding the capability to handle low-earth orbiting satellites.

"Our proven ability to provide fast, accurate and reliable systems on time was instrumental in helping us to win this contract" said Noete. The subsystems are scheduled to be delivered by March 1997.

Calian Technology Ltd. of Kanata, Ontario and it's wholly owned subsidiary SED Systems Inc. design, manufacture and integrate electronic systems with applications in the satellite communication, space and defense markets, and provide related technical outsourcing services. Calian trades on The Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol CTY.
