Software.com releases new internet messaging server; Post.Office 2.0 includes free start-up package and free licenses for first 10 users in effort to seed e-mail marketplace

Business Wire, August 26, 1996

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1996 -- Software.com, Inc. today announced availability of its new native Internet/intranet messaging server, Post.Office(tm) 2.0, a feature-rich and scalable message transfer agent that supports thousands of users on a single platform.

In conjunction with this announcement, Software.com is offering to end-users and resellers a free, fully-functional Post.Office license package for 10 users. This free offer brings smaller companies and workgroups the increased functionality traditionally associated with proprietary PC LAN e-mail systems and at a more attractive entry price.

The promotion is immediately available and will continue until the end of November.

"Post.Office 2.0 is a major leap forward in commercial-grade, native Internet-based electronic messaging," said Valdur Koha, President and Chief Operating Office of Software.com. "Post.Office has become the most popular commercial Internet messaging server in the world because of its ease of use, security and robustness. Post.Office 2.0 once again displays Software.com's commitment to raising the bar on Internet-based messaging servers. Our innovative start-up package allows anyone requiring native Internet e-mail to jump aboard easily and economically."

Post.Office 2.0

Post.Office 2.0 is a natural extension of the industry-leading Internet messaging product developed by Software.com in the initial version of Post.Office. Several new features have been added to extend Post.Office's functionality and simplify usage, including:

-- 7 Mailbox limits for user's mailbox size and the maximum message size that can be delivered to a mailbox -- 7 Convenient display of users' current mailbox sizes and their set mailbox size limits -- 7 Enhanced error handling for queued mail so Postmasters will better understand why mail is queued -- 7 Ability to route outgoing mail to a port other than the standard SMTP port thus allowing gateways to run on the same machine as the mail server -- 7 Configurable to use Windows NT username/password pairs for Post.Office

The Free Start-up Package

In conjunction with the release of Post.Office 2.0, Software.com is revolutionizing the way users deploy native Internet messaging servers. Post.Office 2.0 includes a free, 10-user license that allows smaller companies and workgroups within larger organizations to take advantage of native Internet messaging capabilities immediately with little economic exposure.

"We intend to energize the market for native Internet mail servers through exceptional products and aggressive promotions throughout our channels," according to Dennis Cagan, Vice President of Sales at Software.com. "The barriers to implementing native Internet messaging protocols are now as low as possible. We expect that a major portion of the market will take advantage of our free start-up package and see first-hand the benefits of Internet messaging."
