Microware to Target Internet TV with OS-9 DAVID System Software; Solution will support Mitsubishi DiamondWeb Internet TV

Business Wire, August 28, 1996

DES MOINES, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 1996--Microware Systems Corporation (Nasdaq: MWAR) today announced it will target Internet TV -- the next generation of television -- with its OS-9(R)-based DAVID(R) system software. In a separate release, Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America, Inc. announced their DiamondWeb(TM) Internet TV will incorporate Microware's DAVID environment.

"As the demand for new technologies has grown, Microware has been there to meet the needs of the marketplace," said Ken Kaplan, CEO and president of Microware. "As illustrated by our support of Mitsubishi's DiamondWeb television, Microware is strongly positioned to provide our OS-9 DAVID environment to OEMs developing Internet TVs."

Microware's Internet extension for DAVID will enable consumers to effortlessly access the World Wide Web through their televisions. Consumers will be able to easily switch between broadcast programming and the World Wide Web with the touch of a button. In February, Microware licensed the Java programming environment and HotJava web browser to enable the use of Java applets on OS-9-based devices. In June, Microware announced that it had licensed Spyglass' Client Software Development Kit to provide World Wide Web access to consumer electronics products. These alliances will allow a host of Internet and e-mail applications to be used over the TV set.

For Microware, targeting Internet TV solutions is a natural evolution. For years the company has licensed its DAVID interactive TV environment to leading set-top box manufacturers, and has become a standard in this rapidly developing market. With the Internet at the forefront of today's focus, Microware will be able to leverage its experience in the set-top realm as the same equipment manufacturers design the next paradigm for in-home entertainment -- Internet TVs.

OS-9 Operating System

OS-9 is a full-featured, multitasking real-time operating system. Its scalable architecture allows it to fit a wide range of designs from small embedded devices to large networked systems. The high performance of OS-9 is especially well-suited for consumer electronics that depend upon real-time operation, such as Mitsubishi's DiamondWeb Internet TV, next general PDAs and portable electronic devices.
