EMC and Hewlett-packard expand reseller Agreement; EMC's Symmetrix Storage Systems to be sold with HP 3000 servers in addition to HP 9000 line; Alliance exceeds expectations

Business Wire, August 5, 1996

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1996--EMC Corporation today announced it has expanded its reseller agreement with Hewlett-Packard Company, enabling HP to market and sell EMC's Symmetrix 3000 open storage systems as the high-end storage solutions for its popular line of HP 3000 servers.

The original reseller agreement between the companies, announced in November 1995, introduced EMC's Symmetrix 3000 systems as the preferred high-end storage platform sold with HP 9000 Business Servers. That agreement with HP has exceeded expectations for sales by generating more than $100 million in revenue for EMC in the first six months of 1996.

As a result of that success as well as joint engineering activities between the two companies, EMC's Symmetrix 3000 Integrated Cached Disk Array (ICDA) storage systems can now address the high-availability, high-performance and high-capacity storage needs for HP 3000 servers running on the MPE/iX operating system. HP's sales force will market and sell Symmetrix to new and existing HP 3000 customers. The scalable HP 3000 servers are used for a wide range of client/server applications, including online transaction processing. The addition of a powerful Symmetrix 3000 storage system provides users with a high-availability storage solution capable of supporting the HP 3000 and other UNIX servers simultaneously. "Customers are using HP 3000 servers for an increasing number of mission-critical applications that require the availability, performance and connectivity features of Symmetrix," said Harry Sterling, General Manager of the Commercial Systems Division at Hewlett-Packard. "The combination of HP servers and EMC storage has been very well received by our HP 9000 customers and we are looking to extend the same high-end solutions to our HP 3000 customers."

Paul E. Noble, Jr., vice president of EMC's OEM Group, said, "We have seen a strong surge in demand among HP customers who recognize the value that Symmetrix 3000 intelligent storage can bring to their most demanding, mission-critical applications. Our two sales forces have been able to work together quite effectively to meet this demand, and as a result we are pleased to extend the agreement to include the HP 3000 line. The goals originally set by EMC and HP were aggressive because both companies believed so strongly in the value of our combined technologies. Obviously, we are delighted to see this rapid market acceptance."

Since their introduction in June 1995, EMC's Symmetrix 3000 ICDA systems have been established as the leading independent open storage platform available and are used by the world's largest companies for applications such as online transaction processing and data warehousing. Symmetrix intelligent storage systems enable customers to improve the performance of functions throughout their system from CPU to application by eliminating I/O bottlenecks and to protect their information through innovative solutions for data protection, disaster recovery and backup.
