About Data Marts
Data marts bring the data warehousing concept to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as departments within larger companies. Rather than storing all enterprise data in one monolithic database, data marts contain a subset of the data for a single aspect of a company's business -- for example, finance, inventory, or personnel. According to the 1996 Forrester Research report Raising the Corporate IQ, approximately half of the data warehousing/data mart projects that Corporate IT departments are working on are applications-focused data marts.
