SEAGATE ANNOUNCES FIRST AND ONLY 8 GBYTE FAST ATA - IDE - TAPE DRIVE AVAILABLE IN RETAIL CHANNEL; TapeStor 8000 offers low cost-of-connection, high performance and high capacity
Business Wire, August 5, 1996
COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1996--Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE:SEG) today announced the immediate availability of its TapeStor 8000 Fast ATA tape drive, the first and only 8 Gbyte ATA interface tape drive available directly to end users through the retail channel and the only ATA minicartridge tape drive on the market since the introduction of the TapeStor 4000. The latest addition to Seagate's line of Travan TR-4-class drives, the TapeStor 8000 ATA can store 8 Gbytes of compressed data, or 4 Gbytes of uncompressed data, on a single Travan TR-4 minicartridge, which is included in the price of the TapeStor 8000 ATA kit.
"For the first time, consumers can purchase a large-capacity, ATA tape drive with speedy performance comparable to SCSI drives, without making the investment in a SCSI controller card," said Brian Dexheimer, vice president of Product Line Management and Marketing for Seagate Tape Operations. "Many solutions on the market may handle current backup needs, but no one else offers 8 Gbytes of capacity and the low cost-of-connection of ATA. With all that storage the TapeStor 8000 is a smart investment in the future, as hard disc drive capacity continues to dramatically increase."
The TapeStor 8000 is designed for maximum performance, with data transfer rates as high as 60 Mbytes per minute in both ATA and SCSI-2 versions.
"As a world leader in Fast ATA disc drives, Seagate is the leader in low cost-of-connection and high-performance," added Kevin Perry, director of Marketing for Seagate Tape Operations. "We plan to leverage our strength and expertise in this important technology and fortify our exclusive position in the ATA minicartridge tape market."
The TapeStor 8000 ATA is the ideal backup and removable storage solution for the small office and home user. Customers can quickly and easily ensure the safety of all data stored on their hard drive and save disc space by archiving huge files. Travan TR-4 minicartridges are also excellent solutions for multiple users who need to share files that are too large to send as e-mail attachments.
The TapeStor 8000 IDE tape drive includes Seagate Backup Exec software, the leading data protection and storage management software package. Backup Exec supports DOS, Windows and Windows 95. Optional software is also available for OS/2 and Windows NT. All necessary documentation and mounting hardware is also included in the package. -0-
