ClariNet Communications Announces the First Formatted News on Usenet

Business Wire, August 8, 1996

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 8, 1996--ClariNet Communications, today announced the launch of the first formatted news on Usenet.

This technological breakthrough is available to ClariNet's 1.5 million subscribers and will require them to use Netscape browsers to enjoy the new formatted ClariNet e.News.

"This technology will continue changing the way the world reads news and finds information," stated Roy Folk, president and chief operating officer of ClariNet Communications. By the end of 1996, ClariNet e.News will feature links to other news stories, appropriate Internet resources and links to reference materials such as a dictionary, atlas and encyclopedia.

"This hot technology will enable us to become the Net's premier resource discovery service for Internet users," said Folk.

ClariNet's e.News provides up-to-the-minute coverage on 2,000 stories per day. "Our upgraded product allows our subscribers to view the news in a visually appealing manner while at the same time providing the quality news coverage that they have come to expect," continued Folk. The ClariNet e.News is the Internet's first and largest electronic newspaper.

ClariNet will continue to categorize news stories using its editorial staff and proprietary fuzzy logic system that has been perfected over the past seven years. New technology will then add the type of HTML code normally used for Web pages to the Usenet stories.

Finally, ClariNet will send the formatted stories in MIME wrappers through normal Usenet feeds to ClariNet customers. Readers can view these stories, often with embedded photos, using Netscape Navigator, version 2.02 or 3.0b5 (or later).
