Mendocino Brewing Company Announces Frolic Shipwreck Ale

Business Wire, Dec 11, 1996

HOPLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 1996--In July of 1850, the Baltimore Clipper ship FROLIC, containing 6,000 cases of Edinburgh ale, sank off the Mendocino coast.

In commemoration of this historic event, Mendocino Brewing Company, brewers of Red Tail Ale, has produced a speciality brew, Frolic Shipwreck Ale.

Brewed in the Scottish Ale style, Frolic Shipwreck Ale is more malty and less dry than Red Tail Ale. Frolic is a well-balanced brew that has a starting sugar content of 15.8% and a residual sugar content of 4.5%. It is a medium bodied, deep copper colored ale brewed in a traditional, natural manner, using imported English malted barley and the English hops, Goldings and Fuggles. The use of these hops gives the ale the classic English hop aromas that result in earthy, woody overtones.

Twenty-seven percent of the malted barley used is Caramel and Carastan. These malts produce distinct caramel/toffee flavors and a slight nutty characteristic that stay on the pallet until the next sip. The finish is slightly dry, reminiscent of all of Mendocino Brewing Company's ales. The distinct flavors and aromas of the imported barley malt and hops, combined with Mendocino Brewing Company's unique brewing process, make Frolic Shipwreck Ale a piece of Mendocino County history not to be missed.
