Avoid Holiday Tech Support Hassles; Give Your PC a Free "Digital" Oil Change; Full Version of CyberMedia's Oil Change Software Available Free from Christmas Day to New Year's Day — Gives Glitch-Free Performance to Hot New "Direct X" Games
Business Wire, Dec 19, 1996
SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 1996--When freezes, crashes and other personal computer problems strike, the solution to the problem is often simple -- install a "patch," "bug fix," or a new hardware "driver." But finding these updates isn't easy.
Users often don't find out about software updates until they call a technical support hotline and wait forever on "perma hold," or they might spend hours searching Internet web sites.
This year, update problems are plaguing some of the season's hottest new video games like Delorme 3-D Explorer, Microsoft Monster Truck Madness and Microsoft Flight Simulator. These games use a new three dimensional graphic technology from Microsoft called "Direct X 3.0" that makes games more realistic and lifelike.
Unfortunately, if these games are installed without the correct Direct X-compatible video drivers, users could experience crashes, freezes and other glitches -- or problems with other software on their PCs.
To help make it easy for families and new computer owners to find and install these video drivers during the holidays, CyberMedia is offering the full version of its Oil Change software FREE for one week.
The free version will work from Dec. 25 to Jan. 1, 1997 -- just enough time to bring your PC into the new year with updates, drivers, patches and bug fixes for nearly 1,000 popular programs -- including Direct X drivers for popular video cards from S3, Number 9 Technologies and others.
Oil Change, which usually retails for $39.95 makes it easy to automatically update all the software on your PC, and find the latest "drivers" for new printers, modems sound cards, video cards and other add-ons. First, Oil Change scans your hard disk for the software applications and hardware drivers installed on your PC.
Then, using the Internet, it compares your software with CyberMedia's database of state-of-the-art versions of hundreds of different products. Oil Change indicates which upgrades and files are available, describes what they do, and then downloads and installs the update for you automatically.
Oil Change requires Windows 95, a minimum 14.4 kb modem, and an Internet connection. It takes less than 15 minutes to download the software (at 28.8 bps) from the CyberMedia Internet web site: http://www.cybermedia.com, America Online (keyword: cybermedia) or CompuServe (GO CYBERMEDIA.). All existing free trial versions of Oil Change will also temporarily transform into the full version during the seven day period from Dec. 25 to Jan. 1.
