Business Wire, Dec 2, 1996
KIRKLAND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1996--The Wireless Data Division of AT&T Wireless Services and Comcast Cellular Communications Inc. today announced they have signed an intercarrier agreement for customers who use their wireless data networks.
The agreement will permit AT&T Wireless Services customers to access Comcast's Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD or "wireless IP") networks in key New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware markets. Comcast Cellular will also be able to expand its wireless data coverage in areas adjacent to its existing footprint as well as in other key markets served by AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service.
The companies expect to complete the interconnection of their wireless data networks in the first quarter of 1997. Customer service, rate plans and billing will be administered by the customers' home carrier, allowing them to receive one bill and have one point of contact for wireless data service.
AT&T Wireless Services' commercial CDPD markets covered under the agreement include Austin, Texas; Dallas/Fort Worth; Denver; Fresno, Calif.; Las Vegas; Miami/Fort Lauderdale; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Oklahoma City; Orlando, Fla.; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento, Calif.; Salt Lake City; San Antonio; Seattle; Tacoma, Wash.; Tampa, Fla.; Tulsa, Okla.; and West Palm Beach, Fla.
"We are extremely pleased to be able to offer this enhancement to our customer base," said Holly Weller, Comcast Cellular general manager, Wireless Data Group. "This agreement will enable our customers to expand their wireless data usage to New York and other strategic markets throughout the United States."
"With this intercarrier agreement, we've reached yet another milestone in the creation of a nationwide, seamless wireless data network," said Kendra VanderMeulen, vice president and general manager of AT&T Wireless Services, Wireless Data Division.
AT&T Wireless Services has also implemented intercarrier agreements with Ameritech, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile, GTE and Southwestco Wireless. VanderMeulen said, "We have demonstrated that we can work together to make wireless data a mainstream business-productivity tool."
What Is CDPD?
-------------
Developed by a group of the nation's cellular providers including AT&T Wireless Services (formerly McCaw Cellular Communications Inc.), CDPD allows data to be transmitted over the existing cellular network. Today, CDPD services are available to more than 96 markets and approximately 45 percent of the nation's population. Based on the TCP/IP protocol employed by the Internet and most private corporate networks, CDPD is well-suited for a variety of wireless computing applications used by mobile professionals, including e-mail and database access.
