Aerojet to Develop Upper Stage Engine for Lockheed Martin EELV Team
Business Wire, Dec 24, 1996
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 24, 1996--The U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center awarded a $60 million contract to a Lockheed Martin-led contractor team, including Aerojet, a segment of GenCorp, to develop the new Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) family of more efficient, lower cost rockets.
Aerojet is teamed with Atlantic Research Corp. (ARC) to develop the Agena 2000, a high performance, low cost engine for use on a new upper stage for the EELV.
Aerojet and ARC will update and improve the Agena main axial engine previously operated in the 1960s by the U.S. government. The Agena 2000 will use room-temperature propellants and could place satellites of various sizes into orbits ranging from low-Earth to geosynchronous 22,300 miles above Earth.
The new upper stage engine will be used on many EELV configurations being designed to carry medium-sized, intermediate and heavy payloads, and could potentially be used on other rockets Lockheed Martin is developing.
Aerojet is responsible for turbopump development and all testing. ARC will provide thrust chamber assembly. The "Team Agena 2000" will test fire a prototype engine in late 1997 followed by qualification in 1999.
Lockheed Martin and McDonnell Douglas were each awarded a contract valued at $60 million to produce more detailed designs for the EELV. Lockheed Martin's concept calls for a family of four boosters, featuring common engines, structures and adapters, as well as simplified launch pads and launch operations.
The Air Force expects to select one of the two remaining competitors in June 1998 to complete development and conduct system test-flight of the new EELV rockets.
Aerojet, a leader in propulsion, electronic systems, smart munitions and armaments, is a segment of GenCorp, a technology-based company with positions in polymer products, automotive, and aerospace and defense industries.
