Informix Named Most Influential Database Company in Database Programming & Design's "The Database Dozen" List; Award At DB/EXPO Coincides With Industry Milestone — Delivery of INFORMIX-Universal Server

Business Wire, Dec 4, 1996

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1996--Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ:IFMX) the leading provider of object-relational database technology, today announced its selection by David Stodder, editor-in-chief of Database Programming & Design as the most influential company among the "The Database Dozen: Twelve Companies that Define the Direction of the Database Market."

The third-annual Database Dozen is featured in Database Programming & Design's special year-end issue focusing on the database market and the companies that drive it. In the cover story of this special supplement, editor-in-chief David Stodder said, "Informix is now well on its way to becoming the next billion dollar software company. With good performance marks for data warehousing, Informix is gaining respect in very large database circles that it couldn't have touched before. And as warehouses evolve to capture more data types and integrate data delivery with intranets and the Web, the Informix engine's fusion with Illustra's DataBlade technology will prove timely."

Informix will be honored today at a ceremony at DB Expo in New York City, where yesterday it announced availability of INFORMIX-Universal Server, the industry's only open, completely integrated object-relational database management system (ORDBMS). The company also announced 29 Informix DataBlade modules from Informix and its partners using the latest technology innovations from a wide-range of developers.

"Recognition as the most influential database company in `The Database Dozen' is truly an honor," said Phil White, chairman and CEO of Informix. "Our vision and delivery of INFORMIX-Universal Server this week is a milestone for the industry. For the first time, companies can store and manage any kind of data -- some not yet imagined -- natively in INFORMIX-Universal Server, making end-users more productive and opening new doors for information management."

INFORMIX-Universal Server combines the breakthrough performance and unmatched scalability of Informix's industry-leading Dynamic Scalable Architecture (DSA) with the secure, user-defined extensibility of Informix's DataBlade technology. The newly available object-relational server enables companies to manage all types of information efficiently, including numbers, images, maps, sound, video, Web pages and any other rich data types. Inclusive in Informix's object-relational server are Informix DataBlade modules, the industry's first reusable plug-in, object extensions that allow customers to design the INFORMIX-Universal Server to meet their specific business requirements.

In 1995, Informix's Illustra technology was recognized by Database Programming & Design as the most influential database.
