E/O Networks announces contract with U S WEST; 14-state rollout planned for FDS-1 fiber system

Business Wire, Dec 9, 1996

HAYWARD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1996--U S WEST announced today a two-year contract with E/O Networks.

Under the agreement, E/O Networks will begin full-scale deployment of its FDS-1 telecommunications product in rural areas within U S WEST's 14-state serving territory. The FDS-1 product supports U S WEST's wide-spread service upgrade plans and follows successful completion of a field trial in Buffalo, Wyo., and volume expansion in the state.

According to U S WEST, "We chose FDS-1 because it provides an economical and flexible upgrade path for extending service in 24-to-96 line increments."

U S West currently has upwards of 40,000 (sheath) miles of optical fiber embedded in its network, equating to 1.5 million fiber miles. The company plans to install an additional 9,000 route miles annually and views the FDS-1 as a compatible digital transmission medium to replace aging copper.

"E/O Networks is pleased to be part of U S WEST's service expansion strategy," said Al Negrin, E/O Networks president and CEO. "FDS-1 is designed specifically for subscribers seeking first-time or improved access to telephone and advanced communications services at the lowest possible cost and we believe it will contribute positively to U S WEST's service improvement and cost reduction initiatives." The contract is expected to cover 50,000 lines.

E/O Networks develops, manufactures and markets fiber-optic telecommunications systems for domestic and international telephone companies with low-subscriber densities.
