McAfee Launches Safe Surf'n Initiative; Provides Free Virus Protection to Web Sites and Bulletin Boards; McAfee Now Protects over 10,000 Web Sites and Bulletin Boards
Business Wire, Dec 9, 1996
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1996--McAfee (Nasdaq: MCAF), the world's leading vendor of anti-virus software, today formally launched Safe Surf'n, a public service initiative in which webmasters and BBS sysops can receive free anti-virus protection. The initiative is designed to enable sysops and webmasters to slow the growth of electronically transmitted computer viruses.
In conjunction with the Safe Surf'n launch, McAfee also announced today that over 10,000 web sites and BBSes are currently using McAfee's anti-virus solutions under the provisions of the Safe Surf'n program. The roots of McAfee's Safe Surf'n initiative date back to 1989, when McAfee first began providing BBS sysops free VirusScan licenses to protect their sites. "More Webmasters and BBS sysops trust their important sites to McAfee VirusScan than any other solution," said Scott Gordon, senior anti-virus product marketing manager. "Our new Safe Surf'n initiative helps minimize the risk of downloading a virus-infected file over the Internet. Safe Surf'n extends the provisions of the previous program by making our other anti-virus products, including NetShield for servers and GroupShield for Lotus Notes, available for free as well."
Safe Surf'n Program Details
The McAfee Safe Surf'n program allows Webmasters, BBS sysops, Internet service providers, Web design firms and host firms to keep their sites virus-free. Program participants simply display the McAfee Safe Surf'n logo, which enables them to publicly align their sites with the world's most trusted name in anti-virus software. The logo is automatically hotlinked to McAfee's web site, where users can access a wide range of free anti-virus resources, including downloads of 30-day trial versions of McAfee's software, an online virus encyclopedia, and an online support forum. As an optional benefit, enrolled participants can have their site address posted within the McAfee Safe Surf'n participant list.
Qualified participants in the Safe Surf'n program can register at McAfee's website (www.mcafee.com). Former "Download McAfee" program participants are automatically enrolled in the new program. Once registered, participants can use McAfee's anti-virus solutions for as long as they are active in the Safe Surf'n program. They will also obtain free monthly updates for any platform supported by McAfee VirusScan, NetShield, and GroupShield.
WebShield Discounted for Internet Service Providers
In addition to providing free licenses of the above mentioned products, McAfee has also extended special discounts to Safe Surf'n participants for WebShield, an anti-virus solution for Internet gateway environments. Safe Surf'n participants can now purchase WebShield for $1,995.00, a 78% discount off of WebShield's $8,995.00 list price.
WebShield provides transparent, bullet-proof, high-performance virus scanning at Internet gateways. WebShield resides independent of the network firewall and provides exceptional protection against any virus-infected SMTP, FTP and HTTP traffic on a TCP/IP network. Safe Surf'n program participants can purchase WebShield directly from McAfee, with this special pricing limited to one copy of WebShield per Internet service and hosting provider.
"Aligning ourselves with the anti-virus leader lends credibility to our commitment to ensuring our clients' and their customers' security," said Adam Soffer, CEO of Netamorphasis, a creative New York web site development and hosting firm. "Since we can now purchase WebShield at such an inexpensive price, we can furnish even more transparent and efficient virus protection."
