HP Announces Open Market's Secure WebServer Solution for HP 3000 Server Family; Solution Offers Customers Continued High Availability, Flexibility and Security Needed to Run Internet and Intranet Business Applications

Business Wire, Dec 9, 1996

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1996-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that the Open Market Secure WebServer Solution is now available for the HP 3000 server family. The Secure WebServer Solution from Open Market supports the popular Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Web security standard. This is the second Web server solution to be introduced into the HP 3000 product line since April 1996.

The Open Market WebServer enables customers to leverage their existing HP 3000 systems by extending their capabilities and making them into Web servers. This new Secure WebServer communicates with any popular SSL secure browser to provide server authentication, data encryption and data integrity. It also communicates with non-secure browsers.

"Many customers have expressed the need to conduct secured electronic commerce and communications on the public Internet and, in some cases, also on their private networks," said Rosemarie Chiovari, HP 3000 Internet solutions product manager for HP. "The Open Market Secure WebServer for the HP 3000 provides a high-performance solution to address these needs."

Incorporating Open Market Inc.'s WebServer Software, HP 3000 business servers are excellent for communicating information via a corporate intranet or the Internet. Other solution advantages include the following:

-- Capacity for simultaneous connections -- ensures fast response to clients, ease of handling high hit rates, and minimized hardware- and system-management expenses;

-- Special extended logging facility -- provides critical Web-site activity data to management, including records of browser types and referring URLs; and

-- Script-based access control -- offers highest degree of flexibility for restricting access to information either inside an enterprise or with external users.

HP also is working closely with third-party partners to provide middleware for HP 3000 applications, integration, data access and security.

THE HP 3000

The recent additions of networking capabilities, POSIX enhancements and client/server applications have added strong client/server functionality to the MPE/iX-based HP 3000 business server, expanding its role beyond that of a reliable, high-performing, easy-to-use computer to that of a flexible open server as well.

Hewlett-Packard Company is a leading global manufacturer of computing, communications and measurement products and services recognized for excellence in quality and support. HP has 112,000 employees and had revenue of $38.4 billion in its 1996 fiscal year.
