Drexler Technology receives $936,000 in orders from one customer for LaserCard equipment and system software

Business Wire, Feb 21, 1996

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 1996--Drexler Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:DRXR) announced today that a customer has ordered $936,000 worth of LaserCard reader/writers and system software, representing, in combined dollar amount, the second largest order from a single customer.

Deliveries under the purchase orders have already begun, and the majority are expected to be completed during Drexler's current fourth quarter ending March 31, 1996.

The customer, an established value-added reseller (VAR), has requested that its end-user customer and application not be identified.

Drexler Technology has a network of about 90 VAR companies for marketing, software, systems integration, and installation of LaserCard-based systems in about 50 countries.

The system software sold with each of the card reader/writers is called a "device driver." It interfaces the optical card reader/writers with standard IBM-compatible personal computers so that the card user can write, read, delete, and update data in much the same way as magnetic floppy disks are used. The device driver software was developed by Drexler's subsidiary, LaserCard Systems Corporation.

Drexler's patented LaserCard(R) optical memory card is the size of a credit card, yet holds 4 megabytes of data -- for storing information such as transaction data, text, software, photos, document images, and medical images. A personal computer and a card reader/writer are used for recording and reading these counterfeit-resistant, highly flexible plastic cards. The LaserCard offers high data security, nonvolatility, and on-line or off-line capability.

Drexler Technology Corporation and its wholly owned subsidiary, LaserCard Systems Corporation, are headquartered in Mountain View. Drexler manufactures LaserCard(R) optical memory cards, and LaserCard Systems develops optical card data systems and related software for consumer, commercial, and government markets. -0-

Note to Editors: "LaserCard" is a federally registered trademark of Drexler Technology Corporation for optical memory cards.
