Compaq announces support for Oracle7 release 7.3; Industry leaders team to deliver new levels of database server capability for the distributed enterprise

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1996 -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), the world's leading server vendor, today announced it will team with Oracle Corporation to optimize Oracle7 Release 7.3 for Compaq ProLiant and Compaq ProSignia industry-standard servers. A Compaq/Oracle database server delivers the industry's best TPC-C price/performance benchmark,(a) irrespective of system cost, as well as the best TPC-C absolute performance benchmark for systems under $1 million.(b) Oracle7 Release 7.3 on Compaq servers will be supported under Microsoft Windows NT Server, Novell NetWare, SCO UnixWare, and SCO OpenServer operating systems.

Oracle7 Release 7.3 optimized on Compaq's industry leading platforms will provide an important foundation for line-of-business applications in branch or remote offices, stores, and divisional locations and will broaden the Compaq/Oracle partnership to enable easy and confident deployment of distributed enterprise solutions. To achieve maximum performance and reliability of Oracle software on Compaq platforms, Oracle7 Release 7.3 will be integrated on all Compaq servers using Compaq SmartStart, the Compaq integration tool that optimizes platform configurations and simplifies the installation of tested and reliable servers. Compaq and Oracle also announced the upcoming availability of the Oracle Video Server option for Microsoft Windows NT Server, for which Compaq is the reference platform. Compaq and Oracle will partner to bring optimized multimedia solutions to distributed corporate environments.

For the past two years, Compaq has worked closely with Oracle to develop effective distributed enterprise solutions. The Compaq/Oracle partnership focuses on four key areas when developing products: performance, availability, scalability, and reducing the need for on-site technical support. The first tangible customer benefit produced by the Compaq/Oracle relationship was support for, and integration of, Oracle7 Release 7.1 via SmartStart.
In the area of performance, Oracle recently announced the best-ever TPC-C price/performance benchmark irrespective of system cost, as well as the best TPC-C absolute performance benchmark for systems with a total cost of less than $1 million. The record-breaking performance and price/performance results were achieved on a Compaq four-processor ProLiant 4500 5/166 server running UnixWare 2.1 and Oracle7 Release 7.3.
