BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1996--The U.S. Army has selected Raytheon Electronic Systems to provide satellite communication terminals and associated parts and services for the Department of Defense Milstar program.

The initial $31.6 million contract calls for Raytheon to begin the low rate initial production of a Secure Mobil Anti-jam Reliable Tactical Terminal (SMART-T) system. The contract also covers four production options and spare parts, elevating the potential value of the total award to $212.8 million.

The contract covers the production of 387 transportable SMART-T terminals to operate with the Milstar constellation of satellites. The terminals will provide worldwide, high data rate digital communications for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, as well as other users.

The SMART-T system is a low-cost, vehicle-mounted satellite terminal which provides unattended, robust, worldwide, jam-resistant multi-channel communications support to the military commander in the field.

Jack Kelble, manager of the command, control, communications, and surveillance sector of Raytheon Electronic Systems, said the contract "secures Raytheon's position as the premier supplier of Milstar terminals to all of the services."

Kelble said the tri-service Milstar program, which he termed "vital to the nation's defense," provides a "survivable communications capability that is highly resistant to a wide range of threats."
