Business Wire, Feb 29, 1996

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 29, 1996--Attachmate - The Intranet Company(tm) - today announced Emissary(tm) TCP Server, a scaleable, high-performance TCP/IP-to-SNA internetworking solution for large enterprises.

With its productivity enhancing application services, high-speed communications hardware options, and tight integration with Attachmate(r) client software, Emissary TCP Server gives customers a complete, reliable, end-to-end server and client solution.

"Emissary TCP Server is a strategic component of Attachmate's strategy to give companies access to any business information, regardless of where it resides," said Matt Highsmith, vice president of Corporate Marketing/Strategy for Attachmate.

"As companies expand their enterprise networks to include Intranet services, Internet access, and client/server capabilities, the ability to increase information access and flexibility without abandoning their existing computing investment is a necessity. Emissary TCP Server's open systems foundation makes it a simple, cost-effective way for companies to integrate a TCP/IP network with existing SNA hosts."

Emissary TCP Server is a scaleable enterprise gateway that lets companies connect thousands of TCP/IP users to their SNA hosts while providing centralized administration and management functions.

The product supports up to 2,000 simultaneous TCP/IP connections, up to 5,000 sessions through Attachmate's SNA-over-TCP/IP encapsulation protocol for full IBM(r) 3270 display and printer functionality, and up to 2,000 sessions with TN3270. It also supports simultaneous connections to multiple host systems.

"Migrating to TCP/IP is one of our top priorities," said Ron Stanton, manager of Network Services for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. "Emissary TCP Server lets us maintain the reliable access to host applications and information our people need to do their jobs while allowing us to standardize on TCP/IP on the network. We get the best of both worlds."

Because Emissary TCP Server supports a wide base of client workstations, including Windows(r), Windows NT(tm), Windows 95, OS/2(r), Macintosh(r), UNIX, and DOS, it preserves a company's existing hardware and software investments.

Other advantages include remote monitoring through integration with popular SNMP-based enterprise management systems, DNS-based (Domain Name System) load balancing for maximum uptime and throughput, and mainframe channel attachment for high-speed communications.

Attachmate's own industry-leading EXTRA!(r) Personal Client for Windows NT, Windows 95 and Windows desktops is the ideal client software that exploits all of the functionality and performance of Emissary TCP Server. Additionally, EXTRA! Personal Client comes with its own suite of TCP stack and internetworking applications that works seamlessly with the Emissary TCP Server to further simplify customers' migration to TCP/IP infrastructures.

Emissary TCP Server offers companies significant cost advantages. The product's Windows NT Server and Intel(r) hardware platform combined with a straightforward usage-based licensing model offers a flexible, cost-effective growth path. Its simple installation, configuration, and administration also reduce support and training costs.

In addition to SNA emulation services, Emissary TCP Server includes productivity enhancing print and file services. Print services offload host application printing duties from individual workstations, by concentrating those sessions on the server for better performance and ease of management. Emissary TCP Server's File services offer users seamless access to files on both IBM VM and IBM MVS systems.
