Michelangelo computer virus threat diminishes with preparation; Trend Micro offers free virus detection and removal utility via web site
Business Wire, Feb 29, 1996
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 29, 1996--The threat of severe data loss due to the Michelangelo virus, which triggers on the artist's March 6 birthday, has been greatly reduced in past years due to excellent preventative work by MIS personnel and system administrators.
Trend Micro (formerly Trend Micro Devices) urges corporations and end users to continue these efforts by ensuring their virus detection software is active and up to date.
This year, in a continuing effort to eradicate harmful viruses. Trend Micro has placed free software on its World Wide Web site http://www.antivirus.com that both detects and cleans the Michelangelo virus on IBM compatible computers.
The software benefits from Trend Technology -- a proven anti-virus scanning methodology used in Intel's LANDesk Virus Protect and Novell's ManageWise, among other products. Users may freely download and distribute the Michelangelo virus cleaning utility.
"The old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is a good one in this instance," said Daniel Chiang, president of Trend. "The loss of data caused by Michelangelo can be so great that it's not worth taking the risk, even if the risk is small."
If activated on March 6, the Michelangelo virus "awakens" destroying all data on the resident computer system. Once the virus activates, all data is permanently lost. Other than using anti-virus software like PC-cillin 95 (developed jointly by Trend and TouchStone Software) there is currently no known way for users to detect the presence of the Michelangelo virus on their computer systems.
While the number of reported Michelangelo disasters has decreased in recent years, software developers remind users that timely warnings are largely responsible for alerting people in time to take action.
