Bell Canada Executive to Lead India Cellular Venture

MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 1996--Bell Canada International Inc. (BCI) and the Tata Group of India, today announced the appointment of Mr. Richard D. French as president of Tata Communications PVT. Ltd., the newly formed Indian cellular company which will be providing mobile telephony services in the populous Indian State of Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. French joins Tata Communications on a special leave of absence from Bell Canada, where he was most recently group vice-president, corporate development.

Tata Communications is the operating company formed by the multinational consortium which was awarded an Andhra Pradesh cellular licence in late 1995. Shareholders include the Tata Group, India's largest business house, the American International Group, one of North America's largest insurance organizations and BCI, which is also providing managerial and technical support to the venture. The same shareholders are positioned to receive a second licence to provide basic wireline services in the same Indian market.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of BCE, Canada's largest telecommunications company, BCI is BCE's primary vehicle for investment in non-Canadian network operations, with significant investments in wireline, wireless and cable television networks in the United Kingdom, United States, Colombia, Brazil, China and India.
