SEOUL, Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 12, 1996--Today Former US President George Bush delivered a keynote speech at a luncheon for Citibank customers and business leaders. The presentation, entitled, "The United States/Korea Partnership: Past Accomplishments and Future Opportunities," was given as part of the 1996 Citibank Asian Leadership Series, a prominent program which has brought world leaders to the Asia-Pacific region since 1993.

President Mrs. Bush also joined representatives of Citibank as they made a contribution of 100 million won (US$126,000) to Dr. Chung Yong Kim, Korea's leading liver cancer researcher, who accepted the donation on behalf of Seoul National University College of Medicine Liver Research Institute. Both President and Mrs. Bush are strongly committed to cancer research. In the United States, President Bush is on the board of M.D. Andersen Hospital in Houston, and Mrs. Bush is on the board of the Mayo Clinic.

"Citibank has been part of the Korean financial community since the 1950s, and our office has been here for 28 years," said John Beeman, Country Corporate Officer for Citibank. "Wherever we operate, we are committed to being good corporate citizens and I am very pleased to announce Citibank's donation today, which allows us to give something back to Korea."

"I thank you for this donation to our institution," said Dr. Chung Yong Kim. "It will help our thirty year search for cures and prevention for liver cancer and Hepatitis B -- this country's second main cause of death."

In addition to the keynote address, President Bush will also meet with government officials, Citibank employees, and senior representatives from the industry. The Citibank Leadership Series was launched in 1992 to celebrate the bank's 90th anniversary in Asia.

Past speakers in the program include Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Great Britain; Helmut Schmidt, former West German Chancellor; Javier Perez de Cuellar, former Secretary-General of the United Nations; James Baker, former US Secretary of State; and Dick Cheney, former US Defense Secretary. Futurist Alvin Toffler visited Korea as part of the Series in 1992.

Citibank was named "Best International Bank in Korea" by Asia Money magazine in 1994 and "Best Bank in Asia" by Euromoney magazine in 1995. Citibank is the leading financial institution in Asia for the third consecutive year according to the "Review 200: Asia's Leading Companies," an independent survey by the Far Eastern Economic Review magazine. Citibank ranks 13th in Korea among 26 local and 52 foreign banks. It has 11 branches: nine in Seoul and two in Pusan.
