Palindrome introduces first archiving, HSM and centralized storage management for Microsoft Windows NT; new offerings simplify administration of mixed NT and NetWare Enterprise networks
Business Wire, Jan 22, 1996
NAPERVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1996--Palindrome Corp., a Seagate software company, today announced the first integrated backup, automated archiving and hierarchical storage management (HSM) for Windows NT networks, as well as the first storage management application that centralizes the monitoring and control of backup, archiving and HSM functions in enterprise networks comprised of smaller Windows NT and Novell NetWare(R) installations.
Called Storage Manager(TM) 4.0 - Windows NT Edition, and Visual Storage Administrator(TM) (VISTA) 1.1 - Enterprise Edition, the new Palindrome products are designed for NT network administrators who need more than basic backup and restore services to manage and protect the data on their companies' mission-critical servers.

To simplify administration in mixed NT and NetWare networks, the new releases of Storage Manager and VISTA feature the same user-inteface and functionality as Palindrome's NetWare products. In addition, the new offerings utilize the open-standard ECMA-208 (SIDF) recording format to ensure data interchange between NT and NetWare networks.
"Palindrome has a proven track record in the Novell NetWare market," said Patrick McBride, senior analyst for the META Group. "These new products should enable businesses adopting NT to develop comprehensive strategies for data protection and accessibility."
Storage Manager Highlights
Immediately available, the new edition of Storage Manager synchronizes three separate data protection processes. By integrating backup, archiving and hierarchical storage management into a single product, administrators of NT networks can now more easily perform traditional backup and restore, create permanent archives of important files, and manage server growth by migrating inactive files to secondary storage. The integration of the three processes simplifies storage administration and increases data availability.
The Windows NT edition of Storage Manager is the first product to protect and manage both NT and NetWare servers, with full support for the NT Registry and NetWare Directory Services (NDS). Included in the product are agents for protecting any number of Windows NT, Windows 95(R), Windows(R) 3.1, NetWare 3.1x, NetWare 4.x, DOS(R), OS/2(R), Macintosh(R) and UNIX(R) clients and servers. Storage Manager has a suggested retail price of $1995 for a single-server license and $3595 for a multi-server license.
VISTA Highlights
The new enterprise edition of VISTA is the first dedicated storage management console for Windows NT. VISTA centrally monitors and controls all backup, archiving and HSM processes from a single administrator console and supports all Palindrome Windows NT and NetWare edition products installed throughout the enterprise.
VISTA utilizes a "hub and spoke" architecture where the VISTA console serves as the central hub and other Palindrome products distributed throughout the enterprise serve as the spokes. This centralized approach to managing distributed data results in an intelligent storage system with no single point of failure. VISTA's unique "alert-on-demand" architecture supports LAN, WAN, dial-up and ISDN connections.
The enterprise edition of VISTA is expected to be available in February at a suggested retail price of $1995 for the VISTA Starter Kit which includes NT and NetWare consoles and support for up to five NT and/or NetWare installations of Palindrome Backup Director or Storage Manager software. Additional consoles are priced at $795 each. Additional agent packs with support for 5, 20 and 100 installations are also available with prices beginning at $1,495.
"We have accomplished something unique in the industry," said Randy Littleson, vice president of marketing at Palindrome. "Finally, network administrators have a complete product family to choose from that is scalable, consistent and integrated between Windows NT and NetWare environments."
