PLATINUM technology announces Plan Analyzer for Oracle; tool automates SQL statement tuning to maximize database performance

Business Wire, Jan 22, 1996

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1996-- PLATINUM technology, inc., today announced availability of PLATINUM Plan Analyzer for Oracle, a Windows-based tool that automates the task of tuning SQL statements for Oracle databases. Plan Analyzer eliminates the need to manually create, display, interpret, and test SQL optimization plans to increase database and application performance.

"SQL optimization plans can impact client/server application performance more than any other factor," said Scott Kane, senior vice president of database management for PLATINUM. "But optimizing SQL statements has traditionally been a laborious and often neglected task because it has required a high-level of expertise to interpret the optimization plans. Plan Analyzer automates SQL optimization planning, allowing both novice and expert Oracle administrators and developers to efficiently optimize SQL statements and enjoy improved database and application performance."

How Plan Analyzer Works

Plan Analyzer helps users determine which SQL optimization plan is fastest and consumes the least resources. Using simple point-and-click commands, Oracle administrators and developers can use the standard default optimization methods for each SQL statement: rule-based, cost-based (all rows and first row), and a customized plan with Oracle database hints. Results are provided in a graphical summary, and an explanation of each optimization plan is provided in plain English.

The database tool contains a SQL capture facility that allows users to trap and optimize the SQL code contained in application development tools like Microsoft Corp.'s Visual Basic and Powersoft Inc.'s PowerBuilder. In addition, Plan Analyzer lets Oracle administrators and developers save all SQL optimization plans and performance statistics in a row-level ownership repository, allowing retrieval and verification of optimization plans. The database tool also enables developers to readily implement array operations, which dramatically speed up frequently-used insert, delete, and update operations.

PLATINUM's Product Integration Strategy

Plan Analyzer is part of PLATINUM's product strategy to bring best-of-breed data and systems management to the open enterprise environment -- the networked, heterogeneous computing environment that includes MVS-, UNIX-, and Windows-based platforms and may contain VMS, AS/400, and OS/2 systems.

Availability, Pricing and Platform Support

Plan Analyzer is available immediately. Starting list price is $1,995 per single user license. The database tool is compatible with Oracle Versions 6 and 7, and runs on Windows 3.0 and above, Windows 95, and Windows NT. PLATINUM plans to add Motif support to Plan Analyzer for Oracle in the first quarter of 1996.
