Intel Raises Pentium Processor Performance to 166 MHz; Systems Based on 150- and 166-MHz Processors Widely Available Now

Business Wire, Jan 4, 1996

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 1996--Intel Corporation today announced immediate availability of the highest performing new products in its mainstream Pentium processor line, the 150- and 166-MHz Pentium processors.

These new chips owe their performance to Intel's advanced 3.3-volt, 0.35 micron manufacturing process technology. Intel's high-volume capability will make it possible for system vendors to offer a variety of attractively priced configurations immediately, including products in the retail market segment.

"With the introduction of the 150- and 166-MHz Pentium processors, users who want to experience the full capabilities of Windows 95 and multimedia-rich software will have the best Pentium processor performance available today at their fingertips," said G. Carl Everett, senior vice president, Desktop Products Group. "System vendors are starting this year with the greatest choices of high- performance systems for users, and with ease-of-use increasingly built into hardware and software, we expect PCs to make further inroads as a consumer product."

Everett also said that while the recently introduced Pentium Pro processor will be offered in workstations, advanced desktops and servers, fast Pentium processor-based systems will remain the ideal choice for mainstream business and home computing, where Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 prevail. He added that the immediate high volume availability of the 150- and 166-MHz Pentium processors will enable systems based on the 133-MHz Pentium processor to move to the high volume mainstream, and 100- and 120-MHz Pentium processor-based PCs to occupy entry level for desktop systems by mid-1996.

The 166-MHz Pentium processor delivers 4.76 SPECint95 of performance, and 3.37 SPECfp95 of performance. The 150-MHz Pentium processor delivers 4.27 SPECint95 of performance, and 3.04 SPECfp95 of performance. SPEC is a widely used processor benchmark.

In 1,000-unit quantities, the 150-MHz Pentium processor is priced at $547, while the 166-MHz Pentium processor is priced at $749.

Comprehensive information about the new processors Pentium processor is also available at Intel's site on the World Wide Web.
