C-bus II advanced multiprocessing architecture from Corollary supports the new Intel 166MHz Pentium; decoupled clock speed allows immediate compatability
Business Wire, Jan 4, 1996
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 1996--Corollary Inc., developer of the industry's leading Intel-based multiprocessing architecture, Thursday announced that its C-bus II multiprocessing technology supports the new Intel 166MHz Pentium CPU.
A key factor in the multiprocessing bus' automatic support of the faster Pentium processor is the C-bus II architecture's unique ability to allow the mixing of CPU and system bus clock speeds without sacrificing CPU performance.
In traditional systems, the system bus speeds and CPU speeds are different and the bus and CPU must have a fixed clock-speed relationship, which can cause systems to relinquish vital CPU performance. The C-bus II architecture is based on a decoupled clock-speed design which enables the mixing of clock speeds, therefore the CPU can run in its native frequency without any performance degradation.
"C-bus II was designed from the start to support the faster speeds of the new Pentium CPU," said George White, president, Corollary Inc. "The 100-percent compatibility of C-bus II with the new 166MHz Pentium demonstrates our continued commitment to Pentium-based systems, even as we move into the Pentium Pro market.
"While Pentium Pro is not yet shipping in volume quantities and the Quad version shipping date is not forecasted until the second half of 1996, Pentium-based systems continue to grow in number, performance and functionality -- a clear sign that there is still a substantial growth path for Pentium-based systems."
The C-bus II support for the new Pentium is a great advantage to the many system OEMs currently employing C-bus II multiprocessing technology. With no adaptations to the inherent system design, they can take advantage of the advanced Pentium CPU performance.
About C-bus II multiprocessing technology
The C-bus II is the third generation of Corollary's industry-standard multiprocessing technology. With a fully symmetric architecture that supports up to eight 166MHz Pentium processors and up to 3GB of memory, the C-bus II provides equal processor access to all system resources for exceptional overall system performance.
The C-bus II features a high-bandwidth peak transfer rate of 400MB per second and a 64-bit-wide bus for a high degree of application scalability. With a third-level cache to further boost system performance, C-bus II offers not only integrated ECC memory but also a unique ECC bus for assured data integrity.
