Business Wire, Jan 4, 1996
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 1996 -- EMC Corporation, the world's leading independent provider of intelligent information storage and retrieval systems, opened the new year with a historic milestone -- closing out 1995 as the new leader in terabytes shipped into the worldwide market for mainframe disk storage systems. According to 1995 market statistics from International Data Corporation (IDC) of Framingham, Mass., EMC's share of storage capacity (terabytes) shipped for IBM mainframe and plug-compatible systems rose to 40%, while IBM's share was 37%. In 1990, the year EMC entered the market with its Symmetrix Integrated Cached Disk Array (ICDA) systems, IBM held 76% of the market while EMC held 0.2%, according to IDC.
"Customers continue to choose EMC because the benefits of our advanced Symmetrix technology positively impacts their business, far beyond what other storage systems can deliver," said Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC's President and CEO. "EMC's success is a direct result of superior products and sustained time-to-market leadership." "Demand for high-performance intelligent storage has exploded in recent years, not only in the mainframe market but also in open systems," added Ruettgers. EMC has just completed its first full year in the open systems storage market, quickly establishing itself as a leader and announcing alliances with several market-leading database and server companies.
As a direct result of MOSAIC:2000, EMC has continually introduced advanced technology and features for the Symmetrix 5000 family, placing EMC in the lead for performance; data availability and protection; mainframe and client/server integration; extended distance recovery; data migration; and many other customer requirements. This consistent approach preserves customers' investments through longer useful life of their technical knowledge base, host processors, host application software, and hardware infrastructure.
EMC Corporation is a world leader in enterprise-wide information storage and retrieval technology, designing systems for mainframe, midrange and open systems environments. With 1994 revenues of $1.38 billion, the company has offices worldwide and trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol EMC.
