VIVUS Announces Second Supplier of Alprostadil
Business Wire, Jan 8, 1996
MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1996--VIVUS, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS) today announced that it has entered into a long-term supply agreement with Chinoin Pharmaceutical and Chemical Works Co., Ltd. for alprostadil, the drug substance used in VIVUS' anticipated first product, MUSE (alprostadil).
Chinoin is a Hungarian subsidiary of the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Winthrop. Chinoin now becomes the second source of alprostadil for VIVUS.
"This agreement represents another significant milestone achieved by VIVUS," said Leland F. Wilson, president and chief executive officer. "Having two high quality suppliers of alprostadil significantly reduces our supply risk."
Alprostadil is a synthetic version of prostaglandin E1, a naturally-occurring blood vessel dilator. VIVUS expects to include Chinoin as a second source for alprostadil in its New Drug Application, planned for submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during the first quarter 1996.
Founded in 1991, VIVUS is a leader in the development of advanced therapeutic systems for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, commonly referred to as impotence.
