FCC approval for increased satellite capacity confirms QUALCOMM's OmniTRACS mobile communications growth

Business Wire, July 11, 1996

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 1996--QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) Thursday announced that it has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to increase its OmniTRACS system license from 150,600 to 250,600 OmniTRACS mobile communications units.

QUALCOMM's request to increase its licensing capacity is attributed to the sales success and widespread use of the OmniTRACS system, which has grown from 5,515 units installed in fiscal year 1989 to more than 165,000 units sold worldwide today.

"In today's competitive market, commercial fleets are realizing the need for real-time satellite communications and fleet automation through the use of the OmniTRACS system," said John Sarto, vice president and general manager of QUALCOMM's OmniTRACS division. "This grant, which nearly doubles the system license, is another indication that the OmniTRACS system has proven to be a vital tool for the transportation industry. We are very pleased to receive this authorization from the FCC."

QUALCOMM's family of OmniTRACS products include the OmniTRACS mobile communications and position reporting system; value-added application software designed to enhance existing operations; business solutions and information management systems. QUALCOMM has sold more than 165,000 OmniTRACS units worldwide, with systems operating in the United States, Canada, Europe, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

With headquarters in San Diego, QUALCOMM develops, manufactures, markets, licenses and operates advanced communications systems and products based on its proprietary digital wireless technologies.
