Business Wire, July 23, 1996

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 1996--Art Technology Group (ATG) and Harvard Business School (HBS) today announced the joint design and development of a comprehensive Intranet application for its graduate students and faculty, creating a complete framework by September 1996, to support the school's case-method teaching. The first-of-its-kind system incorporates publishing, communications, interaction, polling and calendar functions, and easy-to-use, Web-based interfaces for students and faculty.

This unique, online environment enables Harvard Business School students and faculty to customize their view of the comprehensive information available on their computers for the MBA program and their classes. The system automatically updates time-sensitive content, such as the syllabi and personal calendars, supplying information pertaining only to each individual. It also allows faculty to preview students' analyses of management cases so they can structure each class accordingly, adding a new level of participation to the classroom experience. This sophisticated, content management framework utilizes ATG's Dynamo, the first open Internet application engine based on the Java programming language.

In addition to Dynamo's content management framework, the project takes advantage of communications modules that enables students and faculty to conduct online course-related discussions and modules that connect students with other students to facilitate online study groups, improve information flow, and foster both formal and informal community interaction.

"Harvard Business School is using state-of-the-art Internet protocols and technologies to enhance the teaching and learning environment for faculty and students by bringing the world to the classroom," said Susan Rogers, CIO, Harvard Business School. "Keeping in mind that interaction between people here is as much a requirement as access to information, choosing the right technology and design firm was truly important to us. ATG has a strong reputation in building exciting, interactive environments for users. The project developed in partnership with ATG has become a key sub-system in the Harvard Business School Intranet. Their broad experience, combined with the superior technical underpinnings of Dynamo, made ATG and excellent partner for HBS."

"We are excited about working with HBS to develop a key application in the growing HBS Intranet that incoming students will use this fall, including an innovative course platform and tools that provide faculty with the flexibility to post and update their courses in real time. ATG deigned this system in close collaboration wit Harvard Business School IT personnel and faculty. Our goal is to work with HBS to enhance the educational experience of students and faculty online and to complement the classroom experience," said Jeet Singh, Art Technology Group's president and CEO. "Our next step will be to expand the application to enable communication among the wider community of Harvard Business School alumni, executive education participants, and corporate recruiters. Additional modules being developed at HBS include an alumni network application and a career service application."
