Data General's AViiON Enterprise Server and Sybase SQL Server 11 set TPC-C benchmark record
Business Wire, July 8, 1996
WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1996--Data General Corporation today announced the best Transaction Processing Council Benchmark C (TPC-C) performance per CPU.
A Data General AViiON AV 4900 server running Sybase SQL Server 11 database software and the company's DG/UX operating system was measured at 3809.7 order entry transactions per minute (tpmC), with a five-year cost of ownership of $129.19 per tpmC. The TPC-C results were run in a client/server configuration. The AV 4900 server was configured with 236 GB of CLARiiON disk storage.
Competitive comparison:(a)
VENDOR/SYSTEM tpmC $/tpmC

"We look forward to raising the performance bar as faster Intel Processors become available," said Dave Ellenberger, Vice President of Corporate Marketing for Data General. "By beating all other chip architectures in performance per CPU, the result reinforces the superior design of the Pentium PRO, as well as Intel's SHV (Standard High Volume) server board, the new building block for enterprise systems. In addition, the tests fully demonstrate the outstanding performance that can be obtained by combining our DG/UX software with Sybase Server 11."
The capabilities of Data General's DG/UX UNIX based operating system, were also demonstrated in the benchmark tests as only one front-end processor, running the same version of DG/UX as the back-end database server, was required to support all of the users in the TPC-C client/server configuration.
Ellenberger added, "Our TPC-C results demonstrate the high performance and scalability of the AViiON server when combined with Sybase SQL Server 11. These results were achieved on a system that also offers complete enterprise features, like PCI expansion, up to 4 GB of memory, and AV Alert 7/24/365 support."
The industry-leading performance and cost of ownership numbers were achieved while using a Data General CLARiiON disk subsystem in conjunction with the AViiON AV 4900. "CLARiiON offers users industry-leading RAID storage capability that delivers outstanding performance and availability," said Ellenberger.
Developed by the Transaction Processing Council, the TPC-C benchmark is the recognized standard for complex transaction processing performance. The benchmark simulates the activity of a wholesale supplier providing a complex processing environment. The results represent the measured new order transaction rate while simultaneously running a mix of other workloads including entering customer orders, shipping product, and checking stocking levels.
The AV 4900 server, Data General's first Pentium PRO Intel based AViiON, begins shipping this month.
