Business Wire, June 17, 1996
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996--QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM), a leader in wireless communications and advanced electronic messaging solutions for the Internet, today announced its Eudora Light email software for Macintosh computers will be distributed by Microsoft with its Internet Explorer World Wide Web browsing application.
Currently Available on Microsoft's web site (http://www.microsoft.com/ie/) and distributed with Internet Explorer for Macintosh computers, QUALCOMM's Eudora Light software will deliver superior electronic messaging capabilities to Microsoft's Macintosh browser customers.
"We're excited that the world's largest software vendor has recognized the value delivered by Eudora Light software and has chosen to bundle it with its flagship Internet browsing application," said Ann Schrader, director of sales for QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies (QUEST). "Today, Eudora software products enjoy a worldwide user base of over 10 million and we look forward to expanding our Macintosh customer base as a result of this agreement."
In addition to being available on Microsoft's web site, the software is available from numerous Internet service providers who include Internet Explorer as part of their customer offerings.
"It is Microsoft's goal to provide its customers with the greatest level of functionality and value to get the most out of their Internet experience," said Don Bradford, development manager for Internet Explorer for the Macintosh at Microsoft. "Eudora software has an excellent reputation in the Internet community and has a rich history of delivering great Internet messaging capabilities to its users. We're pleased to provide our Macintosh customers the benefits of Eudora Light software as part of Internet Explorer."
Introduced in 1988, Eudora Light software was among the first applications to enable user-friendly Internet email management via a graphical interface. The Eudora software family has been either licensed for distribution or purchased for use by a large number of key industry players. These companies include Netscape, AT&T, Apple, MCI, Cisco, GTE, Lockheed Martin, NASA, and Schlumberger. Eudora software was also chosen for Internet email by many of the world's leading universities including MIT, Stanford, The University of California, Brown and Cornell.
A recent study completed by International Data Corporation concluded that QUALCOMM is the dominant leader in the world wide Internet email software market with a 63.5 percent of installed mailboxes and 70.9 percent share of all new Internet electronic mailboxes. The study cites QUALCOMM's widespread distribution of Eudora Light software and the strong incentive for users to migrate to Eudora Pro software as the major contributing factors to QUALCOMM's leadership position in this market category.
Moreover, a survey of Internet users conducted by Matrix Information Directory Services (MIDS) of Austin, Texas, a leading authority on the Internet and its growth, concluded that Eudora electronic mail software has an estimated 10 million users worldwide and that it is the most popular email software for Internet messaging. The study also concluded that over 60 percent of educational institutions and over 50 percent of organizations on the Internet use Eudora software for communication.
Eudora Light software is QUALCOMM's full-functioned, entry-level email software, which was the precursor to the commercially- available Eudora Pro Internet/intranet email application. Eudora Pro software delivers industrial-strength functionality by including built-in encoding/decoding, spell checking, powerful mail filtering, multiple signatures, Kerberos support, on-line help, and documentation and support directly from QUALCOMM.
The company also recently announced the public availability of its Macintosh-based Eudora Pro 3.0 beta product, which adds an improved interface, more powerful filtering, expanded directory services, and address management capabilities and the unique Extended Messaging Services API which allows third-party developers to provide plug-ins to Eudora software.
