Wyse Technology to License Patent-Pending T2000 Thin Client Computing Technology Platform; Wyse Becomes First to Offer Combined Windows Application and Network Computing Functionality to OEMs, Wyse Proliferates $500 Devices
Business Wire, June 21, 1996
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 1996--Wyse Technology, San Jose, Calif., will license its patent-pending T2000 technology to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), further expanding the market for low-cost thin client computing devices. T2000, the platform for Wyse's award-winning $500 Winterm information and Internet access device, can enable companies of all sizes to achieve quick time-to-market with advanced thin client devices. As a recent adopter of the Network Computer (NC) Reference Profile and Sun Microsystems' JavaOS, Wyse will also work with OEMs to develop devices which encompass both Microsoft Windows applications and NC/Java functionality.
Wyse, the world leader in thin client computing, has shipped nearly eight million thin client devices over the past 15 years. The company is equipped to provide optional product manufacturing for its T2000 licensees through its extensive factory capabilities.
MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM MINIMUM COMPONENTS
Two years in development, Wyse's T2000 technology consists of an x86-based computational engine, a highly efficient random access memory (RAM) subsystem supporting from 1.5 megabytes to 10 megabytes of memory, and a high-end graphics engine -- all designed to get maximum performance from minimum component count. As part of T2000 licensing agreements, Wyse will provide engineering support to OEM customers. This support will assist in the porting of unique OEM software "value-adds" to the T2000 platforms.
"We redefined the concept of thin client computing with our T2000 platform and now we are providing leadership for other companies that agree with the concept and require rapid time-to-market," said Wyse Technology President and CEO Doug Chance. "T2000 technology is a new approach to a market segment we've been involved in since our founding in 1982. We're convinced that there is an entirely new market for thin client technology, but Windows application integration is essential. Wyse is the only company which can deliver both Windows applications and NC/Java functionality to develop low-cost devices for corporate, Internet, Intranet, public access or home uses."
UK OEM TAKES ADVANTAGE OF T2000 DESIGN; BECOMES FIRST LICENSEE
The T2000 platform provides numerous advantages to OEM customers. Wyse's use of widely accepted x86 processors and its deployment of underlying MS-DOS-compatible "firmware calls" in the T2000 platform design enables OEMs to take advantage of a broad range of existing development tools and achieve rapid time-to-market. The T2000 platform has been qualified for all major international safety, regulatory and ergonomic standards, further decreasing product delivery time. Additionally, it has already proven viable in mass production with Wyse's Winterm product family. The T2000 platform is also available in a variety of form factors making it easy for OEMs to develop customized products for vertical markets such as point-of-sale or "hostile" environments.
One such OEM which has already taken advantage of the T2000 platform is the United Kingdom's Kerridge Networking Systems. Through the T2000 platform, Kerridge was able to quickly redesign its successful line of custom personality character devices used in vertical market applications. The "personalities" of the device can be changed by merely updating the device's software brain using integrated FLASH technology.
Wyse Technology is the world leader in thin client computing and leading supplier of advanced display technology. Wyse, which has sold nearly eight million thin client devices since its founding in 1981, is also a leading manufacturer of high resolution desktop monitors. Wyse's T2000 thin client platform devices are marketed under the Winterm name and are available through leading distributors and value-added resellers (VARs). Wyse's T2000 product line, general purpose video display terminals and monitors are also sold worldwide by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Wyse has sales offices across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. -0-
