Business Wire, June 26, 1996
SCHAUMBURG, Ill./SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 1996--Motorola's Wireless Data Group and VLSI Technology, Inc.'s Creative System Solutions (CSyS(TM)) subsidiary announced today that they have signed an agreement to license essential patents royalty free for Motorola's RD-LAP(TM) (Radio Data Link Access procedure) wireless data protocol standard.
"We are pleased to add CSyS to the family of RD-LAP licensees," said Gary Kalanj, director and general manager, Wireless Data Systems Division, Motorola. "This licensing agreement is an example of Motorola's continuing effort to support the investments of our DataTAC(R) wireless data network operators by openly encouraging the development of a wide variety of wireless data devices."
The RD-LAP protocol enables the wireless transmission of data over networks based on the DataTAC system from Motorola. DataTAC systems are currently commercially available in Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand and the U.S.
"We're integrating the Motorola RD-LAP protocol into our first product, the SurfCard(TM) wireless data modem, which will be offered by Deutsche Telekom MobilNet GmbH (DeTeMobil) for its MODACOM wireless data network in Germany and Switzerland," said Brian Salisbury, director of strategic marketing for CSyS. "Beyond that, licensing the RD-LAP protocol positions us for success in developing wireless data products for OEM customers all around the world."
Motorola is committed to providing open access to the RD-LAP protocol, and is actively licensing other equipment manufacturers to enhance product offerings for wireless data network systems worldwide.
