AT&T selects SurfWatch as premier Internet filtering software for its WorldNet service; agreement expands the reach of the Internet's leading blocking software
Business Wire, March 13, 1996
LOS ALTOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1996--SurfWatch Software Inc., today announced that it has signed an agreement with AT&T that will enable AT&T WorldNet Service subscribers to take advantage of SurfWatch's Internet filtering capabilities using a free trial version. SurfWatch, which has gained industry praise as an easy-to- use and robust software program, will be provided as a low-cost parental control solution available from AT&T's WorldNet Service.
"Parents and teachers need to be in control of their children's and student's Internet learning experiences, and this requires effective software tools," said Tom Evslin, AT&T vice president for AT&T WorldNet Service. "SurfWatch provides a safety net for the parent-teacher community, which helps make the Internet available to everyone."
SurfWatch lets parents, teachers and employers block unwanted sexually explicit material from their computers' Internet access-without restricting the access rights of other Internet users. The SurfWatch software removes no material from the Internet or any server, but simply blocks it at any computer or local network where it is installed. SurfWatch screens Internet newsgroups, World Wide Web, FTP, Gopher, Chat and other services.
"Despite the powerful educational and entertainment benefits of the Internet, widespread access brings the risk that kids will see, accidentally or deliberately, inappropriate material," said Ann Duvall, President of SurfWatch Software. "SurfWatch is the rational, practical alternative to censorship, and we're delighted that AT&T has chosen this powerful tool for its exciting new WorldNet dial-up Internet service."
The AT&T WorldNet dial-up Internet service is designed to be especially user-friendly so it can reach a broad customer base, including many people who have never tried an on-line service or are new to the Internet.
SurfWatch Becoming Industry Standard
SurfWatch creates Internet products for both Macintosh and Windows-based personal computers and licenses Internet access control technology to the on-line services industry. As a founding member of the PICS consortium, SurfWatch is also supporting the development of standards-based Internet rating systems. SurfWatch is rapidly becoming the industry-standard tool for blocking access to unwanted materials on the Internet.
As a stand-alone product, SurfWatch retails for $49.95, with a monthly subscription fee of $5.95 for site updates. The AT&T version of SurfWatch will be available for download at a cost of $19.95.
SurfWatch Software Inc., based in Los Altos, is pioneering the development of new technologies for the Internet. Founded in January 1995 with a vision of creating high-quality technology products that have a positive impact on peoples' lives, SurfWatch's first products enable parents, teachers and employers to block sexually explicit material on the Internet.
