EMC and Groupe Bull extend OEM agreement to include Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform; New Sagister UNIX Multiframe Servers From Bull To Feature EMC's Mainframe and Open Systems Integrated Cached Disk Array Technology
Business Wire, March 18, 1996
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1996--EMC Corporation today announced it has extended its Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) agreement with Groupe Bull for the French company to market and sell EMC's innovative Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) as the storage system for a new generation of Bull servers -- called Sagister UNIX multiframes -- unveiled Friday.
Symmetrix ESP provides simultaneous storage of mainframe and UNIX data on the same Symmetrix 5000 Integrated Cached Disk Array (ICDA) storage system. The main feature of the new Bull server is interoperability between applications that run on Bull GCOS mainframes and UNIX-based applications such as SAP and Oracle databases. Paris-based Bull is among the top five manufacturers of large-scale computer systems in Europe and has provided OEM versions of EMC storage systems to its customers since 1993.
"The relationship between Groupe Bull and EMC has been successful and profitable for both companies over the past three years and this agreement is a natural extension," said Khaled Marrei, President, Bull Enterprise Information Systems Division. "The combination of EMC and Bull products brings mainframe-class functionality to the open systems environment."
The new Sagister platform, known as a UNIX multiframe server, is designed to deliver the performance, availability and security benefits of a Bull GCOS 7 and GCOS 8 mainframe to UNIX applications -- allowing interoperability between the two and giving customers a single enterprise-wide computing platform. For the past 18 months, the popular project has been known by its code name -- Madison. In addition to EMC, Sagister incorporates applications from Bull partners Oracle Corp., SAP and Novell.
"Intelligent storage from EMC is playing a critical role in evolving data centers where information -- not the CPU -- is at the center," said Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO. "Bull, like EMC, recognizes that its customers are continuing to use their mainframes while, at the same time, deploying leading open systems applications such as SAP R3 and Oracle relational databases. The Symmetrix platform is the ideal storage solution for these types of environments that demand mainframe-class features and functionality." EMC and Groupe Bull signed their first OEM agreement in February 1993. In October 1995, Bull announced integration of the Symmetrix 5100, in addition to the Symmetrix 5200, 5500 and 4800 families, into its offerings for Bull DPS7000 and DPS9000 mainframe customers.
