Seagate Ships New Travan TR-4 Minicartridge Tape Drives; New 8GB Solution Kits Designed For Novell NetWare and Windows NT Environments

Business Wire, March 4, 1996

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 1996--Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE: SEG) today announced the immediate availability of the industry's first QIC-3095 compatible Travan TR-4 tape backup systems. These systems offer high capacity and performance at low cost for the Novell NetWare and Windows NT environments. This announcement continues Seagate's roll out of its recently introduced 8GB TR-4 minicartridge backup solutions.

Available with a SCSI-2 interface, the Seagate MaynStream MS8000M series features up to 8GB of compressed data storage on a single 3M Travan TR-4 media, and up to 4GB on Sony's QIC-Wide 3080. With data compression included in the backup software, the MS8000M achieves a maximum data transfer rate of up to 60MB per minute. The MS8000M products are packaged in a standard 5.25" by 1.6" mounting kit, but can also be mounted in a 3.5" wide by 1" high form factor. The MS8000M products offer backward read/write compatibility with the QIC-3080 format.

"Seagate's delivery of the TR-4 products demonstrates our commitment to offer users the widest choice of minicartridge tape drives with capacities ranging from 800MG to 8GB," said Rich Peters, senior director of marketing for the Tape Products operation. "While we invented the technology and format for the TR-4 class of product, Seagate has licensed it to other companies in order to create an expanded worldwide market base for compatibility and growth."

The MS8000M products, available in both internal and external tape drive models, are packaged in complete kits that include Backup Exec for NetWare or Windows NT single server, unlimited workstations, media, data cables and user guides. Internal models also include mounting hardware.

Seagate's Backup Exec, the industry's leading data protection software package, is a full featured solution that contains powerful tools to protect data on network servers as well as data on stand-alone systems in DOS and Windows, Windows NT and Windows 95 environments that are networked to the server.

Seagate's Fast Sense technology enables the tape drive to automatically sense the host system's fastest available data transfer rate, and then logically selects the optimum tape speed to maximize backup performance. Precision Burst, a proprietary intelligent head positioning system, provides reliable operation at high speed.
